Could Drake Caggiula Wind Up Back in Edmonton?

There’s been suggestions free agent forward Drake Caggiula might be a good fit in Edmonton. Is this the right move for the Oilers if true?

One of the hot topics on Oilers social media threads over the last 24-48 hours is that idea that the Edmonton Oilers might be interested in Drake Caggiula coming back to the team in free agency. The Oilers, specifically general manager Ken Holland has said he’s done at the forward position, but there’s a lot of love for Caggiula in Edmonton and some are wondering if the Oilers would try to make room.

Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal writes, “He’s a bottom six guy, feisty, good for about a dozen goals a year normally. Back in Edm? As media guy we’d love him, so would McDavid and Co. But Oilers have too many F’s signed now.”

That’s the deal. The Oilers would need to move a forward to find a space for the former winger and really good friend of Connor McDavid. That said, it might be wise to try.

Caggiula could fit the style the Oilers are trying to be, he can kill penalties and he’ll come in cheaper than a player like Alex Chiasson and, if Edmonton could move out salary, would give the team a little more flexibility on the books. At the same time, he’s not exactly a top-six forward and that might be a bigger priority for the Oilers right now.

Is This Nothing More Than Talk?

There’s been no indication from the Oilers or GM Ken Holland that the Oilers have their hooks in on Caggiula in free agency. This has strictly come up in some discussion by local media. But, if this was something the Oilers were looking at, is it the right fit?

Edmonton added some key pieces during free agency, but none of the players they brought in are necessarily 20 goal guys. They need someone to play alongside McDavid. Caggiula likely isn’t that guy.
