Cole Caufield to Make Debut for Canadiens Monday Night vs. Flames

Canadiens head coach Dominique Ducharme confirmed on Monday that Cole Caufield will make his NHL debut Monday night against the Flames.

The Montreal Canadiens badly need a win. They’ve lost a couple games in a row to the Calgary Flames who are trying to catch them in the North Division playoff race and one of the issues is their inability to score goals. While the salary cap was believed to be an issue, Canadiens head coach Dominique Ducharme confirmed on Monday that the team have been one step closer to solving those goal scoring problem. Cole Caufield will make his much anticipated NHL debut Monday night against the Flames.

The 20-year-old will make his highly-anticipated debut for the Canadiens tonight and Habs fans couldn’t be more excited. Jonathan Drouin, Paul Byron and Tomas Tatar are all maybes to play, and Caufield will be used on the power play, and “he’ll be well surrounded, that’s for sure,” says Ducharme. The team wants to give him every chance to succeed in his first NHL game.

Caufield had a fantastic season in the NCAA and with the Wisconsin Badgers, taking home the Hobey Baker Award after scoring 30 goals and 52 points in 31 games. He also had two goals and five points in seven games as the United States won gold at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. The Stevens Point, Wisc. native was drafted 15th overall by the Habs at the 2019 NHL Draft.

There are many who believe he’ll make an immediate impact on the roster, but with that comes some high expectations, especially as the Habs struggle here in recent games.

Caufield Seems Ready

Caufield has been skating with the Canadiens during their west coast road swing and has been practicing with the team’s taxi squad. He’s looked good, with plenty of highlight reel goals being scored in practice. But, game action will be an entirely different thing.

These are critical matchups as the Flames sit just four points back of the Habs for fourth place in the North Division with Montreal holding one game in hand.
