The Arizona Coyotes might be feeling the crunch to get Jakob Chychrun traded before the start of the NHL regular season. The team has said they aren’t feeling pressure to do the deal, but the player wants out and all parties involved are more likely willing to make the best deal before games get underway. With that being said, news that the St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Edmonton Oilers might be interested isn’t shocking.
Right now, speculation is the Oilers are in deep.
The price for Chychrun has been high and teams are said to be concerned about his injury history. For example, Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic writes, “Are the Oilers in the Jakob Chychrun sweepstakes? “Too rich for our blood,” said a team source.” Marc Spector of Sportsnet writes, “My understanding is Edmonton Oilers are NOT in on any Jakob Chychrun talks at this time. Philip Broberg is a nonstarter as a prospect going to Coyotes, as is Dylan Holloway. Jesse Puljujarvi – with a 1st rd pick – not enough for ARI.” That doesn’t mean the Oilers won’t remain in contact with the Coyotes if the price comes down or the team can move a combination of a pick, a prospect and a player like Warren Foegle.
Meanwhile, the Blues are reportedly interested but Andy Strickland has reported there have been no serious talks between the two sides. The Senators have been linked to Chychrun for a while, but they aren’t willing to pay what the Coyotes are asking. Again, the asking price will need to drop.
The question now becomes, who budges first? Do the Coyotes cave on their ask and make the cost more reasonable for teams? Or, does a team come out of the shadows and get much closer to what the Coyotes want because they feel they need the player?
