Justin Williams has been hired by the Carolina Hurricanes to work alongside general manager Don Waddell in a special advisor role.

The Carolina Hurricanes have hired one of the most respected men in hockey to act as a special advisor for the team. The club is bringing aboard former NHL forward Justin Williams and has hired him to work alongside general manager Don Waddell.

In a release by the Hurricanes organization, Waddell explained why they’ve brought Williams back:

Justin has been a major part of the culture change that we’ve undergone here. We’re thrilled to add someone with his experience to our front office.

Williams, 39, recently retired after a long and successful career that included a number of seasons with the Hurricanes. He was a leader on and off the ice, recently serving as the team’s captain for some time.

He did move around some during his career, spending time with the Los Angeles Kings and and Washington Capitals following his first stint with the Hurricanes, but he wound up back in Carolina, where he finished out his NHL career.

Nicknamed “Mr. Game 7” for his outstanding performances in clutch situations, Williams is a three-time Stanley Cup Champion and the 2014 Conn Smythe winner. He recorded 797 points (320g, 477a) in 1,264 career NHL games.

This is a decision by the player and the team that just sort of fits.
