Canucks’ Travis Hamonic Won’t Be Traded Prior to 2021 NHL Deadline

The Carolina Hurricanes found out that Travis Hamonic is not available before the 2021 NHL Trade Deadline.

Despite potential interest from other teams, don’t expect the Vancouver Canucks to trade defenseman Travis Hamonic. The team might have been open to a deal if they were to become sellers, but that’s irrelevant since the blueliner is reportedly unwilling to waive hit no-move clause to facilitate a deal.

As per a report by NHL insider and Sportsnet panelist Elliotte Friedman, the Carolina Hurricanes have been seeking a veteran, stay-at-home right-handed defenseman and inquired about Hamonic. They were told he was not available.

Friedman notes that the defenseman is not willing to waive his no-move clause to join the Hurricanes, and for that matter, isn’t willing to waive his no-trade clause at all. It was clear when Hamonic signed with the Canucks that he was wanting to stay at home in western Canada and the assumption was that any team in the U.S. or Eastern Conference wouldn’t be able to acquire him. But, there was still the potential that maybe Hamonic could wind up in Winnipeg or Edmonton if either team showed interest. Not according to Friedman who seems to state unequivocally that Hamonic isn’t going anywhere.

While Hamonic might not be on the move, one player that could be is forward Tanner Pearson. Chris Johnston noted during Saturday’s Headlines report that Pearson is inching closer to a return and is about to start skating with the Canucks. The next step will be seeing if a deal can be worked out between the two sides.

If an extension isn’t part of the equation this season, Johnston believes the Canucks will shop Pearson before the April 12th NHL Trade Deadline.

Hamonic has played in 19 games for the Canucks and has two points. He carries a $1.25 million salary and is a pending unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
