Canucks Getting Close to a Decision on Tanner Pearson’s Future

Reports are the Vancouver Canucks need to get down to business on a Tanner Pearson contract or trade the player.

While the TSN Insider Trading panel was talking about what happens to the Canadian team that comes out of the North Division and has to play a U.S.-based set of opponents in the playoffs, it was mentioned that the Vancouver Canucks have bigger issues on their plate than worrying about that right now.

This includes Canucks general manager Jim Benning monitoring the status of all of his pending unrestricted free agents. Among them — and perhaps the most notable right now — is Tanner Pearson. A pending unrestricted free agent making $3.75 million this season, Darren Dreger says the Canucks are about to being negotiations and discussions with the Pearson camp. Nothing has really gotten under way yet, but, “Benning wants to get that process well underway before the April 12 trade deadline.”

The reason Pearson is a target for the Canucks right now is because Vancouver needs to see if there is a contractual fit for the player and the organization.

Dreger notes that if it turns out Benning won’t be able to make Pearson’s contract fit within the structure of what the team wants to do, a trade is the next thing to tackle. The NHL insider argues that Benning has to get something for Pearson and can’t just let him walk for nothing.

Benning Can’t Make the Same Mistakes Again

Part of the reason Benning’s job security has been discussed this season is because he did such a poor job of asset management last season. Tyler Toffoli, Jacob Markstrom and others all walked for nothing. If he let’s that happen again, he can pretty much kiss his job as the team’s GM goodbye.

So too, once the Pearson situation gets figured out, he needs to shift his focus to extending deals with Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes.
