As per a report by Darren Dreger of TSN and as other sources seemed to have confirmed, the Vancouver Canucks and forward Tanner Pearson have come to terms on an extension. The winger will make $3.25 million per over the next three seasons. The deal is backloaded, with the third year including some signing bonus money. This gives Pearson buyout protection, but makes him easier to trade down the road once the bonus has been paid.
This kind of money and term for a 28-year-old who had 21 goals last year in 69 games, but who also has only 11 points in 33 games this season, is finding mixed reception among the Canucks fan base. Some are saying it’s a fair deal considering what he could do. Others are pointing to the fact the Canucks let a player like Tyler Toffoli walk for one million more per season and Pearson may never do what he did last season again.
This is a player that could have been on the move prior to Monday’s trade deadline but the Canucks wanted to get something done. Word this week was that the two sides were coming along nicely in discussions and it was expected a deal would come together.
Whether you’re on the side of the player out-producing this contract or being the whipping boy down the road, this is a player the organization (or least Jim Benning) really likes.
According to Thomas Drance of The Athletic:
The two sides have agreed that the club will protect Pearson in expansion, although the deal doesn’t formally require it. The contract carries a full no-trade clause in the first year of the deal and a modified seven-team no-trade clause in Year 2. There is not any trade protection in the third year of the contract.
