Vancouver Claims Jimmy Vesey Off Waivers from Maple Leafs

The Vancouver Canucks have claimed forward Jimmy Vesey off waivers. What’s next for the Canucks and Maple Leafs?

Jimmy Vesey Vancouver Canucks

After the Toronto Maple Leafs placed Jimmy Vesey on waivers, the Vancouver Canucks didn’t waste any time grabbing a depth forward and claiming him. A player who wasn’t always getting minutes in Toronto, Vesey will likely see a lot more ice time in Vancouver. For the Leafs, moments after Vesey had officially departed via waivers, Alex Galchenyuk was seen at practice in a regular (non-taxi squad) sweater.

Vesey had 7 points (5 goals, 2 assists) in 30 games with Toronto this season. The 2016 Hobey Baker Award winner, he’s yet to really turn his pre-NHL success into success at the NHL level and has traveled around some in his short career. He’ll get another shot with the Canucks to prove he’s more than just a player with high potential.

Vesey will join the Canucks in Ottawa today and his availability to play will be updated once details of work permit status are confirmed. Agent Peter Fish says he is talking to the Canucks about the next move, there may not be a seven day quarantine.

Thomas Drance said of Vancouver’s decision to pick him up, “Vesey is a competent, NHL-level middle-six forward (something the Canucks don’t have many of) on a value deal who should be available to join the club at half the speed of an AHL recall. Nice get, actually, and perhaps a sign of some modest, enhanced flexibility?”

Why Toronto Waived Vesey

Dubas talked with media about having to put Vesey on waivers and he said, “One of the things we’re looking to do is to increase our flexibility on the roster, but also as [Jack] Campbell gets closer to return and [Wayne] Simmonds is closer to return, we do have to do some juggling with the cap situation.”

There is still speculation the Leafs will want to make a move before the NHL Trade Deadline and we’ll see if Vesey moves makes that easier for Dubas to do.
