Canadiens Sign David Savard to 4-Year Contract

Defenseman David Savard has signed with the Montreal Canadiens. The deal is for four years, $3.5 million per season.

As per multiple sources, including Pierre LeBrun of TSN, defenseman David Savard has signed with the Montreal Canadiens. The deal is for four years at a rate of $3.5 million per season. A coveted defenseman in free agency, word leaked last wee that the Canadiens were a team that would be making a pitch for Savard, seemingly to fill the hole left by the injured Shea Weber.

Early response is that this is a good signing for the Canadiens, but there is some serious chatter about how well Savard will do as many believe his game is regressing at a rapid pace. He played better in Tampa than he did in Columbus, but he was given sheltered minutes in Tampa during the team’s run to a second playoff run to the Stanley Cup.

Per JFresh, he is a stay-at-home defenceman who tends to get heavily outshot but keeps his opponents away from the slot. This screams the Canadiens trying to double down on last season’s playoff formula by being bigger and tougher to play against and make their blue line a physical force for opposing teams. He’ll be added to the Canadiens big four.

The Canadiens also signed Cedric Paquette to a one year deal, worth $950K on Wednesday.
