GMs Don’t Believe Canadiens’ Bergevin Will Stay Quiet at Deadline

Even though Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin says he’s going to stay quiet at the deadline, other GMs aren’t buying it.

While Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin has stated his plan isn’t to do much heading into this year’s trade deadline, other GMs aren’t convinced. As Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman phrased it during Saturdays Headlines report, “what Bergevin is selling, not every GM is buying.”

Part of the reason Bergevin noted he wouldn’t likely be active is because he’s waiting for Ben Chiarot to come back from injury in time for the playoffs. The Habs GM has also already spent a ton of money this past offseason and doesn’t think spending more is the way to go. But, Friedman believes that because Bergevin is so invested in this season and planned to give his team the best shot he could, he’s not about to abandon that plan.

The Canadiens are struggling. Sitting fourth in the NHL North Division standings, they are one point behind the Winnipeg Jets and there’s serious concern the Habs could miss the playoffs after being pegged as one of the favorites to come out of that division. They’ll be heading into a series with the red hot Edmonton Oilers and if the Habs lose two or three out of the three games against Edmonton, Montreal is going to need the help and there won’t be much time to add it.

Canadiens Also Lost Toffoli

Not only that, but the team just learned they will be without their top scorer for at least the next three games. Tyler Toffoli is out with a lower-body injury and interim head coach Dominique Ducharme announced on Monday that the winger remains day-to-day. Toffoli will be re-evaluated closer to the weekend.

Things are not going well for the Canadiens and there’s only so much Bergevin is likely willing to let slide before he tries to make a change. Friedman suggests that if there’s a GM in Canada capable of doing something big and surprising people, it’s Bergevin. Therefore, GMs aren’t ready to believe every word he says, especially when it comes to not doing anything on the trade market.
