Canadiens Could Be In the Market To Trade a Scoring Forward

For teams looking at adding a scoring forward via trade this season, the Montreal Canadiens might be a club to have on speed dial.

The Montreal Canadiens are a team worth keeping an eye on over the next few weeks, according to some insiders. Speculation is that the team is open to trading a scoring forward and that someone like Mike Hoffman or Josh Anderson could find a new home before the NHL Trade Deadline.

On Nov. 3, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported during a TSN Insider Trading segment that the Canadiens spoke with the Washington Capitals and listed Evgenii Dadonov, Jonathan Drouin, and Mike Hoffman as trade candidates. There was talk following LeBrun’s report that the Calgary Flames might be looking for help scoring goals and Marc Dumont of Montreal Hockey Now suggested Josh Anderson might be a player the Flames look at because he doesn’t exactly fit the Canadiens’ new puck-possession style.

Mike Hoffman Josh Anderson Montreal Canadiens

Hoffman has started to pick up the pace with four goals in his last five games. The Canadiens may elect to shop him if he gets hot and there could be teams that show interest in a fairly-consistent offensive threat on an affordable $4.5 million per season contract over the next two seasons. If the Canadiens are willing to retain a little salary, Hoffman becomes even more attractive.

Anderson is a tougher sell. He’s got five more seasons on his current deal (including this season) at a cost of $5.5 million per season. It’s not likely the Canadiens choose to retain salary in that kind of trade so any team adding Anderson is doing so at full price. He’s got five goals and seven points on the season thus far.

Canadiens Pending UFAs

Dadonov and Sean Monahan are the pending UFAs the Canadiens are most likely to try and shop before the deadline. Neither is destined to be with the team long term and if there are assets that can be acquired for either player, the Canadiens would conceivably jump at the opportunity to move out bodies.
