Canadian Teams Daily Rumours: Maple Leafs, Senators & Canucks

Three quick Canadian rumours: Maple Leafs draft vs. need, Chabot trade whispers in Ottawa, and Vancouver’s GM still a sweet chance.

This edition of Canadian Teams Daily Rumours includes three Canadian storylines worth watching. We’ve got Toronto draft chatter (do the Maple Leafs really need another left wing?), Ottawa trade whispers around Thomas Chabot’s pricey contract, and Vancouver’s GM search is still looking inviting for the right builder.

Maple Leafs Rumour: If Toronto Lands the Top Pick, Will They Pass on McKenna?

So everyone’s laying out why Gavin McKenna is the first-overall choice in the NHL Entry Draft. But, if Toronto is lucky enough to get that pick, would they pass on McKenna? Do the Maple Leafs need another left-winger? With Matthew Knies becoming a true power forward and Easton Cowan moving up the chain, left wing isn’t a huge need.

What Toronto really lacks is a right-shot, top-pairing defenseman. That’s where a guy like Keaton Verhoeff starts to look better. He’s big, mobile, moves the puck, and plays the right side. Those traits check real, immediate boxes for this roster. Drafting for need and upside on the blue line could make more sense than piling up forwards the team already has.

Senators Rumour: Is Chabot on the Chopping Block?

Thomas Chabot’s been a Senators’ mainstay through the ugly years and into a taste of the playoffs. But the roster around him has shifted in ways that make his $8M cap hit harder to justify. Jake Sanderson has slid past him on the depth chart, Tyler Kleven’s emergence gives Ottawa a genuine replacement, and Jorian Donovan flashed enough to suggest the left side won’t collapse without Chabot.

Trading Chabot would sting in the room. He’s a leader and a face of the franchise. But it would also open cap space to address real needs. If the Senators are comfortable rolling Sanderson-Kleven-Donovan as the core left side, moving Chabot becomes a practical move to upgrade elsewhere or add roster flexibility. It’s emotional, but sometimes you’ve got to get creative to change a team’s identity.

Canucks Rumour: Why the Canucks GM Spot Will Attract a Team-Building GM

Chaos aside, the Vancouver Canucks GM job still looks plenty attractive. It’s one of those jobs where you can actually put your fingerprint on a team and then have the time to see it through. Rebuilds don’t happen overnight, so whoever slides in gets a runway to shape roster, culture, and scouting without being burned at the stake after one year.

Names like Jamie Langenbrunner have been mentioned. He’s got front-office experience with Boston, and wants to be a GM someday. Vancouver’s mix of talent, market, and patience is rare. Although the season was bad and the team seems weak now, a mess equals opportunity for a smart leader who wants to build something that lasts.
