Buffalo Makes Its Call on Peyton Krebs’s Future

The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed forward Peyton Krebs, just over a week after he filed for salary arbitration.

The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed forward Peyton Krebs, ending speculation about his future with the club just over a week after he filed for salary arbitration.

The team announced the deal on social media Sunday, writing, “KREBSY’S BACK. We have signed forward Peyton Krebs to a four-year contract with an AAV of $4.5 million.”

The extension comes after a career year for the 25-year-old, who set new personal bests across the board last season with 12 goals, 27 assists, and 39 points in all 82 games, adding six more points in 13 playoff appearances. Much of that production came after he was elevated to play alongside Tage Thompson on Buffalo’s top line for a significant stretch of the season.

“I try to just bring that mindset that I’m gonna grind for pucks, I’m gonna be hard on the forecheck and get pucks to my teammates, try to make them better,” Krebs said. “I don’t change that whether I’m fourth line or first line.” “He’s like my Swiss Army Knife that I can just flip out a different blade at any time and let him go at it,” coach Lindy Ruff said last fall.

Krebs had been the Sabres’ lone remaining restricted free agent this offseason, and while he filed for arbitration on July 6, that move is a common negotiating tactic that doesn’t preclude a new deal being reached beforehand — which is exactly how this situation played out.

Krebs had been vocal throughout the offseason about wanting to stay in Buffalo, citing his family’s roots in the area, including the birth of his daughter and his engagement, both of which happened during his time with the organization.

The four-year term buys out two years of what would have been unrestricted free agency, giving the Sabres cost certainty on a versatile forward who can play up and down the lineup, including at center.
