“Buckle Your Seatbelts” Regarding Brind’Amour and Hurricanes [Report]

Things could get very interesting in Carolina when it comes to news, or a lack thereof, about a Rod Brind’Amour extension.

There’s no news of an extension between the Carolina Hurricanes and head coach Rod Brind’Amour, and apparently, things could get very interesting before a deal materializes, if it ever does. According to Elliotte Friedman, he explained during the most recent episode of the 31 Thoughts Podcast, he was sent a cryptic text by a source that noted, “buckle your seatbelts here.”

Friedman was asked what he’s hearing on the Brind’Amour front and said, “I don’t know what to say here.” He explained that he was sent a text that said he should buckle his seatbelt, hinting that things were about to get very interesting on this topic, but he wasn’t entirely sure that the text meant. He believes it’s in regards to a coaching extension, but he’s not entirely sure.

Friedman said, “I really believe this, I have always believed that it’s Carolina or he stays in Raleigh and just doesn’t coach.” He adds, “I don’t think he’s really all that interested in going anywhere else. I think some other teams, they’d love to ask him.”

The NHL insider went on to suggest that the New York Rangers and Seattle Kraken would be among the franchises that would be interested in taking their shot at the free agent bench boss but notes, “I don’t know that anyone really believes that he’s going anywhere.” At best, they want to see where his head space is at and if he’s open to making a move, talk to him about it.

Hurricanes Playing With Fire Here

The risk for Carolina here is that teams are saying, ‘Hey, if you don’t take care of your own guy, who are you going to take care of?’ In other words, if a commodity like Brind’Amour can’t even get an extension done in a place he wants to stay and with a team he said he’d sign with as long as they took care of his assistants and other staff, there’s no loyalty by the organization and that sends a terrible message throughout the rest of the league.

When asked if it’s Carolina or bust for Brind’Amour, Friedman couldn’t provide an answer. He said, “Every day this goes by without a solution, we don’t know.”
