Bruins Rumored to Be Interested in Defenseman Hutton Before Chara

Are the Boston Bruins interested in a defenseman like Ben Hutton? More than one report suggests they might be.

According to a few reports, including one from Joe Haggerty of Boston Hockey Now, the Boston Bruins might be interested in adding another defenseman to their roster… and no, it’s not Zdeno Chara. At least, Chara won’t come first if these rumors are accurate.

While Chara and the Bruins could still work something out, speculation over the past couple of days is that the Bruins have their eyes on Ben Hutton. The veteran left shot blueliner would fit well into the mix in Boston and Haggerty notes the team has been linked “with interest” to the former Los Angeles Kings free agent. Better yet, “he could be a bargain signing for a serviceable guy at this point”, tweets Haggerty.

The Oilers were also said to be rumored in Hutton, but they’ve since signed Slater Koekkoek and Ethan Bear, so they’re probably out of the running if there was any truth to their being a potential landing spot. That leaves the Bruins with no real competition of they’re keen on the idea of landing Hutton on a one-year deal or a PTO.

Hutton’s Not Flashy, But He Could Be Effective

Hutton isn’t a flashy addition, but he was actually a solid piece in 2019-20 on an otherwise awful Kings team. Boston Sports Journal writes:

Hutton, a University of Maine product (2012-15), has still yet to be scooped up by a team after appearing in 65 games with the Kings during the 2019-20 campaign — recording 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) while averaging 18:16 of ice time. The 6-foot-2, 206-pound skater spent the previous four seasons of his NHL career with the Canucks, posting 70 points in 276 games out in Vancouver.

They add that Hutton hasn’t seen much success with strong and competitive NHL teams — he spent time with non-playoff organizations like the Kings Vancouver Canucks — but perhaps he can turn those fortunes around with the Bruins.
