Bruins and Devils Linked in Potential Blue Line Blockbuster Trade
Could the New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins pull off a big trade centered around two blueliners with bright futures?
The Boston Bruins are exploring significant changes on their blue line this offseason, and New Jersey Devils defenseman Simon Nemec has emerged as a prime target, according to multiple reports.
With the team transitioning under new head coach Marco Sturm, the hybrid defensive system has led to struggles with the Bruins’ blueline. The recent decision not to retain assistant coach Jay Leach, who oversaw the defense, further signals a desire for fresh personnel and structure. It could also lead to changes on the roster, with rumors that Mason Lohrei has been discussed in trade conversations.
Enter New Jersey Devils’ defenseman, Simon Nemec.
The 22-year-old right-shot defenseman, selected second overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, is viewed as available by several league sources. While initial reports of a trade request were disputed, the Devils might be open to moving the reportedly disgruntled young blueliner as he heads into restricted free agency on July 1. In 68 games last season, Nemec posted 11 goals and 26 points, showcasing strong offensive instincts and top-four potential.
Nick Goss of NBC Sports writes:
“One possibility is a Simon Nemec trade with the New Jersey Devils. There were conflicting reports out of Nemec’s home nation of Slovakia this week on whether he has asked for a trade. However, James Nichols of New Jersey Hockey Now reported Friday that Nemec has not requested a trade.”
That doesn’t mean the Bruins won’t check in on this situation.

For the Bruins, Nemec would represent a significant and needed upgrade. The team is unlikely to re-sign Andrew Peeke and has been searching for a right-shot defenseman who can contribute in all zones. Lohrei, a promising but seemingly expendable piece in Boston’s system, has been suggested as the centerpiece heading back to New Jersey in such a deal. 98.5 The Sports Hub adds, “There’s no question that Nemec would represent bigger upside and likely an immediate upgrade over Andrew Peeke or Henri Jokiharju on the right side of the Bruins defense.”
Analysts believe Lohrei could thrive with more opportunity on the Devils, while Nemec would slide into Boston’s top-six defense alongside players like Hampus Lindholm or Nikita Zadorov. So too, the Bruins have the cap space to sign Nemec to a new contract.
While no deal is imminent, the framework makes sense for both clubs. Boston would need an extra asset beyond Lohrei, but with him in the deal, they gain high-upside youth. Meanwhile, New Jersey receives a solid left-shot prospect.
