Brady Tkachuk and Jordan Staal Fight 3 Seconds Into Game 1
Check out the thrilling Tkachuk Staal fight that kicked off the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a bang just seconds into the game.
The 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs opened with fireworks on Saturday afternoon as Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk and Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal dropped the gloves just three seconds after the opening faceoff.
The two veteran leaders squared off immediately at the Lenovo Center, delivering a spirited, old-school scrap that electrified the Carolina crowd. Both players took big swings, failing to really land and solid punches before they fell to the ice. Officials stepped in, and each earned five-minute fighting majors. Both returned to the game shortly after, neither showing any ill effects of the fall or the scrap.

This is now the third time Brady has engaged in a fight at the opening faceoff of a game this season. Clearly, it’s the first time in the playoffs, but it seems to be a way he feels gets his team amped up.
The fight set an unmistakably physical tone for the Eastern Conference first-round series between the top-seeded Hurricanes and the underdog Senators. Tkachuk, known for his gritty leadership and willingness to engage, sent an early message that Ottawa would not be intimidated on the road. There are other fans who aren’t sold on this being the best idea, given that each time he does it, he’s off the ice for five minutes. The Senators need his offensive production if they stand a chance of winning the series.
As of this writing, the score is 0-0.
