NHL Trade Talk Recap: Tkachuk Scare, Leafs Use of A.I, and NHL Call Outs

The NHL news cycle was like the Wild West on Wednesday, with many league-wide callouts, AI rumors, and scary injuries.

In Wednesday’s NHL recap, the news cycle felt more like the Wild West, complete with public call-outs and one especially bizarre story out of Toronto. If you’re not already locked in, now is the time—because the calm before the playoff storm didn’t last long. A wave of headlines quickly took over the day.

The most heated moment came from Rick Bowness, who delivered an explosive post-game tirade following Tuesday night’s game. From there, attention shifted to a more concerning development, as Brady Tkachuk opened up about a frightening experience during a weekend matchup.

Then, there was Toronto. In what might be the strangest storyline of the day, reports surfaced suggesting artificial intelligence may have played a role in the dismissal of Brad Treliving.

Those stories—and several others—made for a chaotic and newsworthy Wednesday across the league.

The Blue Jackets Have a Big Decision Regarding Bowness

Vowing to change the culture is the nicest way to put what Rick Bowness said about his team Tuesday night. He was very emotional after the team’s loss and wasn’t sure whether he would get his contract re-upped after this season. With that being said, he clearly had to get some things off his chest.

The media availability following the 2–1 loss to the Washington Capitals delivered some of the most candid comments of the season. Rick Bowness didn’t hold back, saying, “If I’m back, I’m changing this culture,” while also criticizing his players for what he described as a lack of care. In his view, losing simply doesn’t bother the group enough—and that’s a major problem.

Now, the focus shifts to Don Waddell. The team’s president faces a significant decision: stand behind the players or support his coach and pursue meaningful roster changes. One way or another, something has to give—and it could lead to a defining offseason for the organization.

Brady Tkachuk Opens Up About Scary Moment

In what should have been a time of smiles and excitement for what is to come in Ottawa, it was a time of reflection. Ottawa Senators secured their spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Saturday afternoon, thanks to a 3–0 win over the Islanders in New York. But during that game, there was a scary moment for their captain, Brady Tkachuk.

The Sens star went down in a really scary way on Saturday, where he seemingly stumbled out of nowhere, appearing dazed and losing his balance despite taking almost no contact on the play. He did return to the game briefly in the third but then left again.

On Tuesday, he opened up about how the moment was one of the weirdest and scariest moments he’s experienced.

Is A.I. Taking Over the Maple Leafs GM Decisions?

In one of the weirder ways for someone to lose their job, not listening to their boss’s AI trade suggestion is definitely near the top of the list. The NHL has become increasingly data-driven, with advanced stats and analytics driving more decisions. According to a column in The Athletic, MLSE president and CEO Keith Pelley took an unusually hands-on approach ahead of the March 6 trade deadline.

According to reports, he was not merely visiting the war room; he was actively offering ideas and pitching for more assets in trade discussions. One point of discussion was his use of AI in his trade package pitches. This disconnect from GM and upper management might have contributed to Treliving losing his job.

Pelley denies reports of meddling, acting like a GM, or influencing hockey decisions.
