Brady Tkachuk Gets Hat Trick as Brothers Make NHL History
Brady Tkachuk went 10 games without a point, then Matthew Tkachuk helped him end it in a way no brothers have in NHL history.
To the delight of Ottawa Senators fans, Brady Tkachuk went 10 NHL games without a point. On Tuesday night, he erased that slump in one period. Tkachuk scored a natural hat trick against the Columbus Blue Jackets, finishing all three goals in a span of 8:03 in the second period. His brother, Matthew, picked up an assist on every one.
According to the NHL, they are the first brothers to do it.
Brady admitted the drought had weighed on him after joining the Panthers. He said he felt like he wasn’t doing his job, but he always believed the goals would come. As for the help from his brother, he said it was “pretty special” and that he now has to start “returning the favor.”
For Tkachuk, it was a matter of time. He’s too determined and too skilled to stay off the scoresheet forever. But did anyone expect a natural hat trick in just over 8 minutes? Probably not. Panthers and Tkachuk supporters will love the development. Haters will realize that Brady might have just opened the floodgates.
The View from Ottawa
The irony is in Ottawa. The Senators are 5-2 to start the season without their former captain. They’ve scored 21 goals and allowed 19, so the record may be a bit generous, but five wins in seven games is about as good a start as Ottawa could ask for. This was a team that relied heavily upon Brady to lead them and produce offense. Without him, it’s success by committee.

They will likely miss his scoring and physical play at times this season. Still, the front office decided it was time for a change, and the early results are hard to argue with.
Who’s Winning the Trade?
It’s far too early to say. Tkachuk has found his scoring touch alongside his brother, and Ottawa is winning without him. The tests come later, when the schedule gets tougher, and the Panthers have to show the move works over a full season.
The Panthers badly needed Tkachuk to step up, especially after Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand were injured. If he can do his part and produce, Florida will be grateful they made the deal when they did.
