Boston Bruins Hoping to Re-Sign Deadline Acquisition Taylor Hall

Since being picked up at the trade deadline by the Boston Bruins, Taylor Hall has impressed and may get a contract extension as a result.

The trade deadline acquisition of Taylor Hall continues to look better and better every day for Don Sweeney and the Boston Bruins.

After signing a one-year, $8 million deal with the Buffalo Sabres this offseason, the hope was Hall would be able to make a great tandem with Jack Eichel and lead the Sabres to the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Instead, things went about as bad as they could have, and by the time Hall was traded at the deadline he had just two goals and 19 points in 37 games.

Coming off of just an ok 2019-20 season, some began to question heading into this years deadline if the 29-year-old was in decline. However, since being picked up by the Bruins he has proved that is not the case. In 16 games with his new club, he has eight goals and 14 points, while also having a plus/minus rating of plus15. The fit with the team, and in particular the fit with centerman David Krejci, looks like the perfect situation for Hall, and according to team President Cam Neely, they would like to extend him if possible.

Of course, fitting in Hall and his contract won’t be easy, especially given the fact that as of now both Tuukka Rask and Krejci are on expiring deals and will need to be re-signed as well. If Hall is fine with taking a discount, then this could be a great fit moving forward. However, if he is hoping to get another pay day with a cap hit similar to the $8 million he commanded this past offseason, he may be forced to move on.

Major Team Impact

As mentioned above, Hall is having a great stretch personally with the Bruins, but for arguably the first time in his career it is also helping in terms of team success. Outside of a 2017-18 New Jersey Devils squad that limped into the playoffs, as well as last years Arizona Coyotes who only got in due to the league extending the number of teams in the postseason, he has never played on a successful team in the NHL before, certainly not one to this degree.

Since acquiring Hall, the Bruins have gone 12-3-1 and were able to pass the New York Islanders and obtain the third seed in the East Division. The problem for them before the deadline was their lack of offence, and this trade has not only helped, but completely turned the team around and has them looking like serious contenders out of the East once again.
