More Change as New York Rangers Fire Head Coach David Quinn
After John Davidson and Jeff Gorton were fired by New York Rangers owner David Quinn, the team has fired head coach David Quinn.
Not long after John Davidson and Jeff Gorton were relieved of their duties by New York Rangers owner David Quinn, the team has fired head coach David Quinn. The New York Post’s Larry Brooks is also reporting that assistants David Oliver, Jacques Martin and Greg Brown have also been let go by new general manager Chris Drury and a search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

Dolan said after releasing Davidson and Gorton that their firings had nothing to do with the team statement that the NHL should have taken swifter action by suspending Tom Wilson. Instead, Dolan noted that changing direction with management was something he’d been thinking about doing for some time. The firing of Quinn seems to confirm that the organization was, in fact, looking to make wide-sweeping changes.
Quinn led the team to a 27-23-6 record this season. They finished fifth in the East division and missed the playoffs. Their 60 points didn’t get them close to catching up with the New York Islanders for the East’s final spot.
Quinn’s was the Rangers coach for three seasons and strung together a record of 96-87-25 in that time. He’s a good coach and should be a candidate for other opportunities. He was instrumental in the development of the cadre of impressive young Bluebloods that features Adam Fox, K’Andre Miller, Ryan Lindgren, Pavel Buchnevich and Kaapo Kakko.
That said, there are also a number of other good coaches that will be available this offseason. Mike Babcock, Gerard Gallant, Bob Hartley, John Tortorella, and Bruce Boudreau are just a few of the names on the market. Travis Green of the Vancouver Canucks could be an interesting name to watch here, assuming a contract extension isn’t worked out in Vancouver.
