Blue Jackets Set to Sign Cam Talbot to 1-Year Deal

The Columbus Blue Jackets are set to sign unrestricted free agent goaltender Cam Talbot to a one-year deal.

It appears UFA goaltender Cam Talbot has landed a job this offseason. Surprisingly still a UFA, the former netminder for the Detroit Red Wings was looking for work, and the Columbus Blue Jackets have given him a contract. With Elvis Merzlikins injured, it makes sense that the Blue Jackets would have been looking for a Plan B.

As per a report by TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, “Hearing the Blue Jackets will be signing UFA veteran goalie Cam Talbot, 39, to a one-year deal ($950k) later today. Colleague @Aportzline speculated in his piece today that this might possibly happen.”

Talbot went 12-9-6 with a 3.19 GAA and .883 SV% across 34 games with Detroit last season.

With Merzlikins out, the organization needed a goalie to share the workload with Jet Greaves. Talbot is a good fit with the experience in this kind of role. He can handle fewer starts, but is a capable 1A if needed. He’s not the guy who is going to make Greaves feel like his position or status as the starter is in jeopardy, but he can push the young netminder and act as a bit of a mentor.
