Blue Jackets Officially Hire Mike Babcock as Head Coach

Mike Babcock, former Maple Leafs coach, joins the Columbus Blue Jackets as their new head coach, seeking fun and familiarity.

In a significant move for the Columbus Blue Jackets, but one that was unofficially announced weeks ago, Mike Babcock has been announced as their new head coach, bidding farewell to his role as a Toronto Maple Leafs’ employee. Babcock says his decision to join Columbus was primarily influenced by the prospect of having fun, something he found again by working in the college ranks.

Having known key decision makers like President of Hockey Operations John Davidson and general manager Jarmo Kekalainen for decades, Babcock felt a sense of comfort and familiarity with the Blue Jackets. So too, at the age of 60, the opportunity to work with a group he already has a strong rapport with was highly appealing to him.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Babcock stated, “I’ve known these guys forever, so you’re more comfortable with them. I’m at the stage in my life, I’ve done this for a long time. I’m only doing it if it’s going to be fun, and this is going to be a lot of fun. And I like having fun.”

The Blue Jackets’ decision to appoint Babcock as their head coach signifies their desire for an experienced leader with a proven track record. Babcock brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong coaching pedigree to the team. Throughout his coaching career, he has achieved great success, including a Stanley Cup win with the Detroit Red Wings in 2008. Still, he left the NHL under less-than-ideal circumstances so his tenure with the Blue Jackets will be watched closely.

As Babcock embarks on this new chapter in Columbus, there is anticipation among fans and the organization for the positive impact he will have on the team’s performance. But, will be he have a negative impact on the players? With his expertise and the support of a familiar management group, Babcock is poised to inject a new level of energy and enjoyment into the Blue Jackets’ environment.

The official confirmation of Babcock’s appointment marks the beginning of an exciting era for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
