Blackhawks Sign Max Domi and Andreas Athanasiou

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed Max Domi and Andreas Athanasiou, likely in the hopes they have good seasons and can be traded.

With people around the NHL scratching their heads as to what exactly it is the Chicago Blackhawks are trying to accomplish, Scott Powers broke the news that the franchise has signed forwards Max Domi and Andreas Athanasiou to new deals at the opening of NHL free agency. Considering all the deals the team has made to send out a series of players, there it’s not at all clear what the game plan is in Chicago right now. The most likely bet is that GM Kyle Davidson is hoping both will have strong seasons and then he can trade them for picks at the 2022-23 trade deadline.

The Chicago Blackhawks signed both Domi and Athanasiou to one-year, $3-million contracts. They are relatively fair contracts considering both players have offensive upside and will be used in top-six roles considering the lack of depth on the roster after all their recent deals. More importantly, they are deals that, when prorated at the deadline, are affordable contracts that expire for playoff contending teams.

Domi has played well in spurts but been inconsistent. it’s been years (2018-19) since he scored his 72 points in a single season with the Montreal Canadiens. If he plays with someone like Patrick Kane, he could produce again. If Kane is moved, Domi won’t have a lot of help.

Meanwhile, Athanasiou has speed to burn, but he too has not always delivered offensively when given the opportunity. He is coming off a 17-point season in 28 games with the Los Angeles Kings. His career best is 54 points with the Detroit Red Wings in 2018-19. it was enough to entice Ken Holland to bring him over to the Oilers, but he failed to do anything of significance. He went to the Kings and didn’t produce consistently there either. Still, he has the potential to score and for the Blackhawks, this is a solid pickup.

The Blackhawks also added Colin Blackwell to a two-year deal at an annual average of $1.2 million per season.
