Blackhawks Owner Requests Removal of Brad Aldrich’s Name from Stanley Cup

The Chicago Blackhawks have requested that Brad Aldrich’s name be removed from the Stanley Cup

As per Emily Kaplan, the Chicago Blackhawks have requested that Brad Aldrich’s name be removed from the Stanley Cup. She reports that owner Rocky Wirtz sent a letter to Lanny MacDonald, chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame and in it they humbly request his name be x’ed off the Stanley Cup.

The team cited times in the past where names that had nothing to do with winning the Stanley Cup have had their names removed, including Basil Pocklington (father of former Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington) and add, “out of respect to each and every player who sacrificed to earn their place in history and on the Stanely Cup, our request is based on principle and our moral belief that a convicted sex offender does not belong on the Stanley Cup.”

This all comes after news that an investigation into the allegations of abuse against former Black Ace Kyle Beach turned up some troubling findings. Aldrich not only abused Beach, but many members of the Blackhawks organization hid the fact they knew about the request for help from Beach for over a decade. GM Stan Bowman stepped down and former coach Joel Quenneville stepped down from the Panthers organization on Thursday.

There are questions about whether or not that 2010 Blackhawks team should have an asterisk placed beside their name based on what happened in that year and while it’s unlikely to happen, Aldrich’s removal seems like an easy decision for the NHL and Hockey Hall of Fame to approve.
