Bad News For Blackhawks as Dach Likely To Miss NHL Time With Injury

Kirby Dach is being ruled out of the World Junior Championships and will miss time with the Blackhawks this season thanks to an injury.

We reported on Wednesday evening the news that Kirby Dach had suffered a potentially serious injury in a warm-up game against Team Russia at the World Junior Championships. On Thursday, news is breaking about the severity of that injury.

Dach bumped into Ilya Safonov in the third period of Canada’s 1-0 win over Russia and after completing the check, knew something was wrong almost immediately. Dach grabbed his right arm, took the glove off his hand and skated to the dressing room and did not finish the game.

According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, while there’s no official word yet from Hockey Canada on the injury suffered yesterday, Dach is being ruled out of the World Junior Championships. It’s also said that he will likely miss time with the Blackhawks and some NHL action, although how much time is not yet clear.

Neither Team Canada nor the Blackhawks have provided further details but the news is not good, especially for the Hawks who also received news that Alex Nylander is out long-term thanks to knee surgery.

The Blackhawks have deemed he needs to come back to Chicago for further examination.

The Should He Have Played Debate

There are a lot of people saying, ‘this is why NHLers shouldn’t play in the World Juniors’ today but it’s still one of those situations where an injury can happen at any time.

Not only that but the the Blackhawks knew the risks and had me made it through without getting hurt, it would have been great development and an opportunity to play more minutes. It’s certainly a tough break but it’s hard to blame the Blackhawks for this.

The depth for Team Canada is extremely strong so this news isn’t disastrous for the club. As for what it means for the Blackhawks, this is potentially awful news as this season could be a breakout campaign for the young man. Hopefully the injury isn’t anything too long-term.
