Avalanche Signing Ben Meyers Huge For Next Year’s Salary Cap Situation

The Colorado Avalanche landed the prize of college free agency, but more than that, helped out their salary cap situation next season.

The Colorado Avalanche have won the Ben Meyers’ free agent sweepstakes, but more than that, they’ve done themselves a world of good for next season when the team has to make some difficult decisions based on their salary cap situation. Meyers has a chance to make the team next season and at entry-level money. The Avs will need productive players on low-cost deals.

Meyers was a highly-coveted college free agent. He had his pick of the teams he could have gone with as almost everyone was interested. If he plays in some regular-season games, he could burn the first year of his entry-level deal, but he won’t be eligible for playoff games. Still, he’s joining a club that is widely considered the favorite to win the Stanley Cup. While it’s a bit of a surprise he chose the Avs because they are his hometown team’s rival, that he’d want to go where he has a good chance to win isn’t a shocker.

Meanwhile, the Avs will need to make some offseason moves to shed salary. They’ve got big deals coming up for Nazem Kadri and Andre Burakovksy and it is expected the Avs will lose at least one of these two players to free agency, possibly both. Josh Manson recently landed in Colorado and it’s not clear what his plans are. The Avs also need to sign their goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Having Meyers on a two-year contract that will see him make $925K next season is a huge help.

As many have said on social media today, the rich get richer. The Avs signed the cream of the college free agent crop and a team that was already good got better. Guaranteed to make the playoffs this season, if the Avs put him in some games, it will simply be a showcase, getting fans excited for what might be coming next season.
