With No Guardrails on Mike Babcock, What Could Go Wrong?

Edmonton is betting Mike Babcock can push its stars without pushing them too far—and DJ Smith may be the insurance policy.

In the Edmonton Oilers NHL trade-talk panel, the Mike Babcock stuff got weirdly interesting fast. Like, there aren’t really any guardrails here. The challenge Babcock threw down was basically “If you’re not all-in, if you’re not letting me push it, it’s not going to work.”

And the important part? Nobody really pushed back. Nobody put a safety net in place for the situation. It almost feels like Edmonton decided, “Let’s just see if this trapeze act works without a net.”

It’s Babcock’s Choice How He Behaves in This Situation

That’s why I’m having trouble with what’s gone on with the Oilers. In the best-case scenario, Babcock pushes the right buttons, makes everyone accountable, and gets players bought in. Then, Edmonton’s culture gets dialled up—fast. The worst-case scenario is also clear: if the message gets too intense, too rigid, or too “my way or the highway,” things can get messy quickly.

And if the room doesn’t correct course early, you don’t find out until the season starts going sideways. Then you’re just stuck riding it out while everyone’s waiting for the next blow-up.

The Oilers Seem to Have Found Their Coach 100%.

From what was said, Edmonton seemed to genuinely pivot hard into this hiring process after their other options didn’t really match what they wanted. They interviewed candidates, got more hands-on than usual, and then landed on Babcock as “their guy.” The shocker, too, is how quickly everything moved. Babcock went from basically being retired and happy to being publicly introduced at a full press conference a few weeks later. That timing alone makes it feel like the organization was going all-in on the decision.

There was also a moment where they talked about how confident he was in Edmonton media when describing the whole “who came to who” story. And the panel basically felt like this is a calculated risk. Yes, Babcock has a history in Columbus, Detroit, Toronto. These are places where he apparently didn’t always land cleanly.

Can DJ Smith Be the Buffer for Babcock, Or Is He the Likely Coach in Waiting?

But Edmonton’s bet is that this time will be different because the whole team wants this, and they brought in DJ Smith as a kind of buffer. DJ Smith being there—paid as an assistant—is apparently not super common. It feels like Edmonton is trying to create a “check” on Babcock without publicly admitting they’re worried.

The big question is: how far is too far? When does “push the team” cross into “make everything uncomfortable?” We’ll all see during losing streaks when media and fans get louder and harder. What I’m as interested in is whether McDavid will take direction if Babcock challenges him to do something he doesn’t think will work.

Flying Without a Net Is Exciting, But the Worst-Case Scenario Is Problematic

So yeah—this choice has real upside. But it’s also a “no net under the trapeze” kind of situation. And the season will basically decide if Edmonton’s guardrail was blind confidence—or actual buy-in strong enough to keep it all under control.
