Jets Claim Anton Forsberg, Oilers Goaltending Situation Unclear

The Winnipeg Jets have claimed Anton Forsberg off of waivers, leaving the Oilers to scramble at the goaltending position.

The Winnipeg Jets have claimed goaltender Anton Forsberg off of waivers on Friday. That gives the Jets their third string option after losing Eric Comrie, but it leaves the questions about what happens in Edmonton with the Oilers goaltending situation. At the very least, the Oilers netminding situation is extremely unclear. At the worst, the Oilers have one NHL experienced goalie available.

This is now the second time this week Forsberg has been claimed off of the waiver wire. The first came after the Hurricanes picked him up from the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday. The Hurricanes were looking to trade him and pick up an additional asset, but ended up waiving him again, only to lose him.

It was believed the Oilers were going to be interested in reclaiming the netminder but Winnipeg had the option and placed a claim in as well.

What Do the Oilers Do Now?

What’s so interesting about this is the timing for the Oilers as it appears Mike Smith could be dealing with an injury or illness and could miss some time.

Mikko Koskinen played in a back-to-back on Wednesday and Thursday to start the 2020-21 NHL season, but the original plan was to dress Smith who was unable to go. AHL regular Stuart Skinner was brought in off the taxi squad in an emergency backup role Thursday night.

Tippett did say that Smith was “deemed unfit to play” and they would see where things were at today (Friday), but it doesn’t necessarily answer goaltending questions for the Oilers even if Smith returns. Should he not, Edmonton could be in the market to improve at the position.
