Who Gets the Starting Job in Net for the Rangers?

Which of the three New York Ranger goalies will play during the postseason?

Every team will have roster questions heading into the play-in rounds and eventual playoffs. With extra players available to each team, who plays in what position will be carefully considered before the final rosters are set.

In New York, the Rangers have a three-headed goaltender issue they’ve been dealing with most of the season and during the playoffs, what to do with Igor Shesterkin, Alexandar Georgiev, and Henrik Lundqvist, will be watched closely.

It’s good to have options, but the Rangers might be splitting the net between three capable goaltenders and that rarely works. To make matters worse, head coach David Quinn has no idea which way he’s leaning, at least no publicly.

While speaking to Dan Rosen of NHL.com, Quinn explained:

“You can make a case for all three guys. There’s a lot of reasons to take Shesty, there’s a lot of reasons to start Hank, and there’s reasons to start Georgie. This is such an uncertain time that that will play out over the course of the two-and-a-half weeks that we’re going to have before we drop the puck.”

“Hank’s history factors in, Shesty’s season factors in, everything factors in. We’re going to consider everything when we make that decision. For every player, the time that we have between when we start practicing and the start of the games is going to be pivotal, but none more so than our goalies.”

The Rangers Will See Who “Grabs” The Net

It sounds as though the plan is to see who wins the net in a very short period of time. Remember, play-in rounds are only five games. That means, whoever gets the start in Game 1 has literally one game to get it right. Should he, the Rangers may roll with that netminder for the rest of the series. Should the Rangers get it wrong, they’re in a hole rather quickly.

Going down 0-1 in a best-of-five series isn’t necessarily a death nail, but what happens if the second guy doesn’t make the most of their opportunity? By the time it rolls around to goaltender number three, it may be too late.
