Werenski Provides Major Update on His Future with Blue Jackets

Zach Werenski spoke with the media on Thursday and has made it clear that, despite the trade speculation that surrounded him this summer, his preference is to remain with the Columbus Blue Jackets for the long term.

Werenski took some time to answer questions after working out at Nationwide Arena, saying that being back in Columbus reinforced his belief that the city is where he wants to be. Asked about his future, the Blue Jackets defenseman didn’t say it was a lock he would be signing an extension, but he certainly made it sound like that was his priority. “Ideally, I’m here for the long term,” Werenski said.

Werenski added that his focus is on winning and doing so in Columbus. He also indicated that Thursday would be the only time he plans to publicly address the trade rumors that emerged during the offseason. “I think my statement is exactly how I feel. I want to win. I want to win here in Columbus and that’s all I’m focused on.”

Following a summer in which there was talk about his future and several rumors that he might be traded, things really heated up when it appeared the Blue Jackets had, in theory, a deal done with the Dallas Stars. That changed the mood in the room to the point where Werenski realized that this might be all-too real. He quickly returned to the Blue Jackets and made sure everyone knew he didn’t actually want to leave.

Things quieted down, but there are still whispers that, until an extension is signed, he could ultimately be moved. Thursday’s chat with the media seemed to lower those odds significantly. In fact, Werenski seemed to think that other big pieces in Columbus would also be staying put.

Werenski also offered an update on teammate Adam Fantilli, who recently returned to Michigan. The defenseman said he expects Fantilli’s contract situation to be resolved and believes the young forward wants to remain with the Blue Jackets. “I’m sure he’ll get signed and it’ll get done,” Werenski said. “I wouldn’t be too worried.”

Retaining both Werenski and Fantilli would be big for the Blue Jackets. Given there was almost a trade and ton of talk about an offer sheet, the Blue Jackets could use a couple of off-ice wins.
