Wayne Simmonds Open to Trade, Rather Stay with Maple Leafs
Wayne Simmonds is going to patiently wait for an opportunity again in the NHL. It’s not clear if he’ll get that shot with the Maple Leafs.
After clearing NHL waivers, the future of Wayne Simmonds in Toronto isn’t entirely clear. TSN’s Chris Johnston is reporting that the Toronto Maple Leafs winger isn’t sure what the team has planned for him and is being patient in the hopes that he gets another crack at playing on the roster this season.
Simmonds’ status remains in limbo but word is the Leafs are looking to trade the forward. Elliotte Friedman had recently reported, “With season-opening rosters finalized tomorrow afternoon, TOR sent an email making it known 1,019-game vet Wayne Simmonds is available. Return is not as important as “doing right by the player.” Simmonds is open to a deal, but according to Johnston, he’d prefer to stick around or, at the very least, be traded to a Stanley Cup contender. Considering the player has a modified 10-team no-trade clause, he does have some say as to where he winds up.
As for playing with the Maple Leafs again, Johnston also notes that something would have to change within the roster such as injuries or something in the salary-cap picture for him to rejoin their lineup. The team simply doesn’t have the room nor the spot to give him on the roster as constructed.
Simmonds will continue to work hard and stay ready. And, if he gets the chance to play again, he’ll embrace it. Should it look like that chance isn’t going to come in Toronto, expect him to be open to accepting a trade so he can finish off his NHL career under better circumstances. Being waived on a close-to-NHL minimum contract is not exactly how he’d like to see things end.
And, if it looks like things are going to go sideways, might Simmonds accept a trade to a destination like Philadelphia where he played much of his career and it makes sense to end things in a city that embraced him in a major way? The Flyers are rumored to be interested.
