Capitals Could Eye Rittich If Flames Fall Out of Playoff Race

Might the Washington Capitals be interested in talking to the Calgary Flames about goaltender David Rittich?

As per an article by Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, the NHL insider wonders if the Washington Capitals and Calgary Flames might be a fit in a trade prior to this year’s NHL Trade Deadline. The Flames have their No. 1 in Jacob Markstrom but there’s concern in Washington about their starter Ilya Samsonov. Could something work here between these two teams?

LeBrun writes, “The sense I get out of Washington is that the next few weeks will be important to get a better feel for Ilya Samsonov and where he is with his game.” These buzz it that Washington believes he can be their starter for years to come, but to ask he carry the load this season, while staying as consistent as he needs to be as the No. 1 guy in such an odd and condensed a season might be too tall as task.

Meanwhile, David Rittich is a pending UFA at the end of this season, it’s not a given he’ll be back with the team and there are still questions about whether or not Calgary is even going to make the playoffs this year.

LeBrun adds:

“The Caps are all-in and the window to win is tight. So it’s why I think if there’s still any doubt at all closer to April 12 they go out and bring in some insurance in goal. And what better fit than Rittich, who is a pending UFA.?

A Potential Problem With This Idea

The Capitals have next to nothing in terms of salary cap room if these two teams are going to strike up a deal and Rittich is involved. The Flames will need to eat at least half of the netminder’s $2.75 million cap hit.

In a flat cap NHL, it’s a lot to ask any team to retain a ton of salary, but that’s not an impossible thought if the Flames are out of it and the Capitals are willing to give up prospect or draft pick in return. After all, Rittich isn’t breaking the bank this season.

The other issue here is that new coach Darryl Sutter isn’t likely conceding the season after just arriving. The team picked up a big win over Montreal on Thursday night.
