Vegas’ Handling of Bruce Cassidy Situation Drawing League-Wide Attention

The NHLCA is closely monitoring the Bruce Cassidy situation as the Vegas Golden Knights continue controlling interview permissions for the former head coach.

The situation surrounding Bruce Cassidy and the Vegas Golden Knights continues to become one of the biggest storylines of the NHL offseason.

After reports surfaced that Vegas has denied multiple teams permission to speak with Cassidy following his firing, the National Hockey League Coaches’ Association released a public statement saying it is “closely monitoring” the situation.

That wording is important.

The NHLCA is not formally stepping in or attempting to override league rules. Instead, the association is signaling that it is paying close attention to how this situation unfolds and whether it creates a concerning precedent for coaches around the league moving forward.

Why the NHLCA Statement Matters

The NHLCA’s statement makes it clear that while it respects NHL rules surrounding contracts, it does not believe coaches who are no longer actively working for their club should be prevented from pursuing other opportunities.

Cassidy remains under contract with Vegas despite being fired. Under NHL rules, that gives the Golden Knights the ability to deny other teams permission to interview him.

Legally, Vegas is within its rights.

However, the NHLCA appears concerned about how those rights are being used. The association specifically called it “unprecedented” if multiple teams continue being denied permission to speak with a Stanley Cup-winning coach who is no longer behind the bench. That line alone shows this situation has caught the attention of coaches around the league.

What Could Happen Next?

There are a few realistic paths forward.

One possibility is that Vegas is simply waiting until after their season is done before allowing teams to formally interview Cassidy. That would delay the coaching market while still allowing Vegas to maintain contractual control in the short term. GM Kelly McCrimmon spoke on Tuesday and said the team’s “focus is on the playoffs and teams understand that.” It sounds like Cassidy will be allowed to speak to teams after Vegas either wins or is eliminated.

Another possibility is that Cassidy and Vegas agree to a voluntary termination of his contract. If both sides mutually part ways — potentially involving Cassidy giving up the remaining money owed on his deal — he would immediately become free to speak with any team without needing Vegas’ permission.

That would instantly open the door for clubs like the Edmonton Oilers, LA Kings, or other teams looking for coaching changes to aggressively pursue him.

For now, though, Vegas still controls the process.

What Actions Could the NHLCA Actually Take?

The NHLCA’s influence is more political than legal in this situation. The association cannot force Vegas to grant permission requests, nor can it override existing NHL contractual rules. Cassidy’s contract still gives the Golden Knights leverage.

What the NHLCA can do is continue applying public and private pressure. Their statement already accomplishes part of that by bringing league-wide attention to the issue. Publicly labeling the situation as concerning increases scrutiny on Vegas and potentially on the NHL itself.

Behind the scenes, the NHLCA can also communicate directly with the league office and advocate for Cassidy’s ability to pursue employment opportunities. They may also assist Cassidy in discussions surrounding a possible contract resolution or release.

Long-term, this situation could also spark conversations about future rule changes regarding fired coaches who are still under contract.

Potential changes could include:

  • Mandatory release windows after a firing
  • Limits on how long interview requests can be denied
  • Automatic contract releases for coaches no longer employed by the team

Those discussions would likely happen after the offseason, but the Cassidy situation may become the catalyst for them.

A Situation the Entire League Is Watching

At this point, the NHLCA’s statement serves as a clear message that the coaching community is paying attention.

Vegas may legally hold the leverage today, but if this situation continues dragging out, pressure could mount on both the organization and the league to reconsider how these situations are handled moving forward.

And with multiple teams reportedly interested in Cassidy, this story may only be getting started.
