According to NHL analyst Pierre McGuire, Detroit Red Wings veteran Trevor Daley has formally requested a trade from the team and spoken to general manager Steve Yzerman about said request.
Brad Galli, a sports anchor at WXYZ Detroit quoted McGuire on Twitter Thursday when he posted, “His contract’s up at the end of this year. He’s already spoken to Detroit management, and if he gets a chance, he’d like to move on to have a chance to play for a Cup.”
Word of players possibly being moved out of Detroit is not a surprise. But, as far as we can tell, this is the first player this season to formally request a trade from the Red Wings who have been at or near the bottom of the NHL standings all season.
Daley, 36 years old, is in the final year of a three year contract that pays him just north of $3 million per season. He was likely to be shopped anyways as a rental. His request is really just a formality and could be more about letting Yzmerman know that he’d welcome a trade and not to hang onto him past February 24.
Daley is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion and he’s likely looking for another opportunity to win his third. It will be interesting to see if he garners much interest as he’s not the player he was when he won his last championships, but has a wealth of experience and is averaging decent minutes on the blue line.
At 36, there will be less expensive and younger options out there.

Some time in the NHL must have a roll of used stick tape and a pair of skate guards they want to trade? Thanks for next to nothing. #byefelicia
