Touching Oshie Hat Trick Brings Peace to Crazy Rangers vs. Capitals Game

Just when you think the chaotic scene during Wednesday’s donnybrook between the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals was going to shed a terrible light on the NHL, a touching and emotional story about a hockey player and the loss of his father broke out.

The NHL headed into last night’s game between the Capitals and Rangers with the hockey world talking about Tom Wilson, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, what constitutes a suspension, team toughness and more. It left the game talking about TJ Oshie and his emotional on-ice goodbye to his dad. Nearly all the chatter was about the incident that had taken place just days prior with Wilson. While it was certainly was an interesting story line, it was somewhat disappointing as it took away from the emotional return involving Oshie.

The Capitals forward sent out a tweet on Tuesday morning that his father, Tim Oshie, had passed away. “Coach Oshie”, as he was referred to in the tweet, became known to hockey fans all around the world immediately after the Capitals 2018 Stanley Cup win when his son got very emotional speaking about him in an interview.

To honour Oshie’s father, the Capitals all wore stickers on there helmets for last night’s game that read ‘Coach’. For anybody who believes in hockey gods, last night certainly helped prove their case. Not only was Oshie’s team able to secure a 4-2 win, but he was able to score a hat trick, with the third being an empty net to seal the deal. It was an incredible moment and one that saw the 34-year-old get emotional on the bench immediately afterward.

It certainly was an interesting game in terms of emotions, given that the game started out with a line brawl right after puck drop. While many have different opinions on what took place to start the game, it seems everyone was in agreeance that what happened at the end regarding Oshie was incredible.

Important Team Win

Not only were the goals great for Oshie who is grieving the loss of his father, but they were extremely important for his team as well. With the win, the Capitals stay tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for first place in the East Division with 73-points, while also having one game in hand. The race between the two will come right down to the wire.
