The Winnipeg Jets Needed a Miracle. The Canadiens Gave Them One.

After nine straight losses, the Winnipeg Jets pulled off an incredible comeback. Jacob Fowler’s response offers a lesson in bouncing back.

You don’t see that every night. The Montreal Canadiens had a 4-0 lead over the Winnipeg Jets early in the third period on Tuesday, and it looked like the game was pretty much in the bag. Winnipeg had lost nine straight, so there wasn’t much reason to expect a comeback. But somehow, the Jets found a way.

They scored four goals in just 2 minutes and 8 seconds. Kyle Connor tied it with a power-play goal with 32 seconds left, and Dylan Samberg finished things off in overtime. Final score: Winnipeg 5, Montreal 4. For the Jets, that’s got to feel pretty good. After nine straight losses, they finally got something going. For Montreal, though, this will be tough to shake off.

The Canadiens Goalie Didn’t Sugarcoat How He Felt

Canadiens goaltender Jacob Fowler didn’t try to dress things up when he spoke about the collapse. He called it embarrassing and acknowledged that everybody was frustrated. But what I found interesting was what he said next. Fowler wasn’t looking for an excuse to forget it. He wanted to break down the video, sit with the coaches and figure out what he could do better.

He also made a point worth remembering. When your team scores four goals, you should expect a pretty good chance of winning. You don’t expect to be sitting there afterward wondering how the game got away from you. That’s a tough lesson for a young goalie, but it’s part of the job. Some nights you make the saves, your teammates take care of the scoring, and everybody goes home happy. Other nights, the puck keeps finding its way into the net, and you have to face the video the next morning.

Sometimes You Have to Get Back on the Horse

Fowler said something else that made sense. You get back on the horse. That’s probably the best advice for Montreal right now. There’s no point spending the next week reliving one awful night. Learn what you can, put it behind you and get ready for the next game.

The Jets will certainly remember this one. After nine straight losses, they finally have something to smile about. And what a way to get that first win. Maybe the biggest thing Winnipeg can take from this game is that a four-goal deficit doesn’t have to be the end of the story. Sometimes, you just need one goal to get things moving.
