The NHL Has Cleared Mike Babcock to Return as a Coach
The NHL has cleared Mike Babcock and it likely he returns to the league to coach the Edmonton Oilers.
According to a report by Elliotte Friedman, the NHL has cleared former head coach Mike Babcock to return to the bench. It is likely he will be hired by the Edmonton Oilers.
The league released a statement saying:
“The League has completed its review of Mike Babcock’s tenure in Columbus, and of certain alleged conduct associated therewith. Our investigation has concluded that, even in a light least favorable to Mr. Babcock, there is no current basis to restrict his employment in the League.”
The league formally opened an investigation into his 2023 resignation from the Columbus Blue Jackets around June 15, after the Stanley Cup Final wrapped up. Elliotte Friedman reported the league had been holding the file until the Cup Final finished, and it took less than four days to do their interviews and due diligence.
Earlier this week, Chris Johnston had reported that people close to the situation believe Babcock would ultimately be allowed to work, though he’s cautioned against prejudging an investigation that isn’t finished. Reporting had pointed to additional concerns beyond the well-known cellphone incident from his Columbus tenure, including an unreported allegation involving former Blue Jackets forward Patrik Laine.

As of today (June 18) the NHL investigation seems to be over. Friedman predicted this week that he didn’t expect the process to take long, since the league was reportedly annoyed at how much attention the story got during the Final.
