The Canadiens Big Offseason Question: To Trade Oliver Kapanen?
Oliver Kapanen’s future in Montreal is uncertain—but his trade value is rising. Keep him or move him? The Canadiens face a key summer call.
Is Oliver Kapanen headed out of Montreal this offseason? The short answer is maybe. And there are decent arguments for both keeping him and moving him. Kapanen had a solid rookie year. He put up 22 goals and added some real energy to the team. But the playoffs raised a few eyebrows.
He played in only 7 of 19 games and didn’t produce when he did get in. That matters a lot more in June than in March. Kent Hughes tried to frame it as fatigue and the wear and tear of a long season, which is fair enough. But coaches also shorten leashes when they don’t fully trust a player in key moments. And that’s really the question here: trust matters just as much as production, and right now that part feels a little uncertain.
Kapanen’s Trade Value Is High Right Now
That uncertainty actually does something interesting; it boosts his trade value. He’s young, affordable, and can play center, which is always a valuable mix. Around the league, that’s the kind of player teams look at as a low-risk, upside bet. He’s a young player who’s already shown he can score 20-plus goals, still on an entry-level-type contract, and just scratching the surface of what he might become.
If Montreal wants to chase a more established top-six center or a veteran who fits a tighter playoff structure, Kapanen is exactly the type of asset that gets mentioned in those conversations. You’re not selling low here. Instead, you’re selling potential, which usually brings back something useful if the timing is right.
There Are Good Reasons for the Canadiens Keeping Kapanen
On the other hand, keeping him makes just as much sense. The Canadiens still have a hole down the middle, especially in that second-line center spot, and Kapanen is already one of the closest internal answers. He’s cheap, he knows the system, and he brings continuity — something that often gets undervalued when teams start chasing big summer moves.
If the front office believes the playoff usage was more about fatigue or matchup decisions than a deeper issue, then giving him a bigger role next season is the safer, more patient approach. And patience matters, especially with young forwards who are still learning how to carry their game into high-pressure hockey.

Will Hughes Move the Young Centre?
So when does a move actually happen? Timing is everything. If Kent Hughes can turn Kapanen into a clear upgrade — a two-way center, or a more physically reliable playoff winger with some depth attached — then it’s a conversation worth having. But if the market doesn’t really move, holding him and betting on internal growth is probably the smarter play.
The bottom line is that Kapanen is both tradable and important. That’s exactly why this becomes a real summer storyline. Other teams will call, as they always do with players like this. But whether he actually moves comes down to whether Montreal can find something better without weakening what they’ve already started building.
