Teams Inquiring With Rangers About Alexandar Georgiev’s Availability

It’s not clear if the New York Rangers are sellers this season, but teams are apparently calling them about goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.

The New York Rangers find themselves five points out of a playoff spot and the fourth place Boston Bruins have two games at hand. While they could add to make a final push, it’s unlikely they find themselves in the playoff picture and the team could be sellers before the NHL trade deadline, should they suffer a couple of losses.

If so, the Rangers might have a couple of interesting pieces teams could be interested in. At the top of the list might be goaltender Alexandar Georgiev. The goaltender market is rumored to heat up in the next couple of days and The Fourth Period is reporting that some clubs are believed to have inquired about the netminder.

Obviously, Georgiev even being available is not a given. First, no one really knows if the Rangers are selling. Second, it’s not clear they even want to move Georgiev should they be selling. Still, according to the report, “multiple sources have told TFP some teams have discussed Georgiev, at least internally, and others have poked around on his availability, something that occurred last off-season.”

What makes this worth discussing is the fact that the Rangers other goaltender, Igor Shesterkin looks like he’s the real deal. If he’s the clear No.1 in the team’s foreseeable future, Georgiev could be expendable if Rangers GM Jeff Gorton decides to entertain calls. That said, the report also notes, “Right now, though, a move might be unlikely ahead of the deadline.”

Georgiev, 25, has one-year left on his contract, which comes with a $2.425 million salary cap hit.

Rangers Might Stay Quiet

A team that typically is active around trade deadline time, the Rangers might not do much this season. The team is playing better of late and they might just ride it out to see how things go, perhaps adding a small depth piece that doesn’t cost much in terms of assets.

If they do move a piece, the Rangers might look to trade defenceman Brendan Smith. It’s not unheard of for teams to trade pending UFAs in the midst of a playoff push and at 32, Smith’s future with the club appears to be uncertain. He does have some trade protection in the form of a 10-team trade list.
