Tavares Under Evaluation After Injury Scare at Leafs Practice
Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares is “being evaluated” following an injury scare at the team’s practice on Wednesday. Tavares fell awkwardly during a drill and left the ice limping. The 34-year-old forward didn’t return, raising concerns that he might have suffered an injury that could keep him out.
“He’s been a great player for us, for sure, in a lot of areas. Hopefully, he’s OK,’ said head coach Craig Berube. In 44 games this season, Tavares has 20 goals and 42 points, averaging 0.95 points per game.
The incident occurred in the corner of the rink as Tavares’ skate tangled with defenseman Chris Tanev’s leg. The fall caused him to nearly do the splits. The incident brought an end to his practice, but Berube isn’t sure with the status of his veteran and former captain is.
Berube took questions after practice, offering limited details. “I didn’t even see it… It kind of happened behind the net. He’s being evaluated now.” He noted that the Leafs’ medical team is looking at him. It is expected there will be more news later on Wednesday.

The Maple Leafs Don’t Want to Lose Tavares
Tavares has been incredibly impactful for the team this season. After handing over the captaincy and playing on an expiring contract, there was some worry about how that might impact his campaign. He’s responded well, contributing both on the ice and as a leader in the locker room.
Any significant injury would be a major setback for the Leafs. They’ve been up and down of late and are looking to keep momentum in a competitive Atlantic Division. Tavares is on pace for 36 goals and 77 points this season and is looking to sign an extension with the team in the offseason. There has been chatter that a contract extension was imminent.
