4 Takeaways: Oilers’ Feisty 6-3 Victory Over Golden Knights

The Edmonton Oilers won 6-3 against the Vegas Golden Knights in a feisty affair that had a bit of everything.

The Edmonton Oilers extended their winning streak to five games with a thrilling 6-3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in a high-energy, heated matinee clash. Powered by Leon Draisaitl’s three-point performance and strong contributions from depth players like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Connor Brown, and Zach Hyman, the Oilers stormed out to an early 5-0 lead, let Vegas back in and scored once more, holding any further surges for the win.

Despite a blunder playing the puck that led to a turnover and a goal against, Stuart Skinner stood tall in net again. He fought off a relentless Vegas attack with 38 saves, while the rivalry’s physical edge reignited tensions from past playoff battles.

With the win, Edmonton has pulled within three points of the Golden Knights for first place in the Pacific Division, setting the stage for an exciting race atop the standings.

Leon Draisaitl Dominates Again

Leon Draisaitl continued his torrid scoring pace, racking up three points (1-2-3) in the win. He’s now on a five-game point streak with an impressive 13 points (5-8-13) over that span. He sits atop the league’s standings with 21 goals this season.

Remarkably, the Oilers have won 39 consecutive home games when Draisaitl records three or more points.

Depth Scoring and Defense Steps Up

The Oilers received balanced scoring, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (1-1-2), Connor Brown (1-1-2), and Zach Hyman all finding the scoresheet. Hyman, snubbed by Team Canada earlier this month, has made a strong case for inclusion, scoring his fifth goal since December 4. That’s five goals in five games. The fact the Oilers are starting to get consistent contributions from multiple lines is paying dividends.

This game was also important from a blue-line perspective. Evan Bouchard played despite being a game-time decision. He logged 22:51 in ice time, showing no effects of the injury from Thursday night. Darnell Nurse also continued his hot streak as he has scored three goals and nine assists and is a plus/minus +16 in his last 17 games played.

Stuart Skinner Stands Tall

Skinner faced a barrage of shots, making 38 saves to secure the victory. The Golden Knights had over 75 shot attempts, but Skinner’s resilience in net was crucial, particularly during tense moments when Vegas threatened to shift momentum.

He did misplay the puck on a shorthanded goal against, which is going to be what many fans remember about his performance. That would be a shame considering how well he played outside of that one mistake. Fortunately, he was bailed out by another Skinner, as Jeff Skinner scored Edmonton’s sixth goal to halt the Golden Knights’ momentum.

Animosity Reignites Between Rivals

The game’s physicality highlighted the lingering animosity from past playoff battles. Jack Eichel’s dangerous cross-check on Mattias Ekholm went unpenalized, leaving fans and players frustrated.

Moments like these fueled the intensity of the matchup, with emotions running high on both sides. It became clear these two teams didn’t like each other.

With their fifth straight win, the Oilers are now just three points behind the Golden Knights for first place in the Pacific Division. The win not only showcased their improved play but also set the stage for their next game, which, unfortunately, won’t be until April.
