The Avs will ink the NCAA forward to a one-year ELC with a $952.5K Cap Hit and $1.025M AAV. As per Puck Pedia, the deal includes a $850K salary in the NHL, a $102.5K signing bonus, a $72.5K games played bonus, and an $85K minimum. It all starts in 2026-27.

Hughes was a Hobey Baker finalist who had generated plenty of interest over the past few weeks. The Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens were among the other frontrunners. There was even talk that the Toronto Maple Leafs were trying to get in on the action.

It is an interesting choice for Hughes as the Avalanche have a lot of center depth, making his jump to the NHL a bit more challenging. The Avalanche have Nathan MacKinnon, Martin Necas, Nazem Kadri, Nicolas Roy, Brock Nelson, and Jack Drury. Perhaps it’s being under the tutelage of those players and joining a Presidents’ Trophy-winning franchise that was appealing.
