As Alex Ovechkin continues to shoot his way up the all-time goals standings in the NHL, one former player and now executive had a tremendous message for the “Great 8.”

Steve Yzerman sent Ovechkin a video congratulating him on his passing him on the list. Yzerman said, “He Alex, Steve Yzerman here. I just wanted to congratulate you on moving into sole possession of ninth place on the league’s all-time scoring list.” He went onto add, “Oh, and one more thing… if you ever break Wayne Gretzky’s record for all time goals in the league, after watching your Stanley Cup celebrations, I want to be invited to your party.”

This may be the best congratulatory statement ever given by anyone in the history of sports. We’re with you Stevie-Y. If Ovechkin breaks that record, the party will be outstanding and Ovechkin may go on a bender that never ends.

Not to mention, it’s hard not to like Ovechkin, not just because of the way he plays, but some of the things he does. He recently took a warmup with the No. 24 on his jersey in honor of the late Kobe Bryant who tragically passed away this past Saturday in a helicopter accident. Great recognizes great, regardless of the sport.
