Stars Make Move to Free Up Huge in Cap Space Ahead of Deadline

Dallas Stars create cap space by placing Seguin on LTIR, freeing nearly $10 million ahead of the NHL trade deadline.

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Dallas Stars are making their move ahead of the NHL trade deadline, freeing up significant cap space by placing Tyler Seguin on LTIR. The move will free up nearly $6 million in cap space that the team can use to acquire another player or players ahead of March 6.

Friedman writes, “There is word Dallas filed paperwork declaring Tyler Seguin out for the rest of the regular season & playoffs. By doing this, Stars get full cap relief heading into the trade deadline. Feel for Seguin, who underwent surgery for a torn ACL. Wanted to return, but couldn’t.”

This is essentially going to be the money and cap space the Stars needed to take a big swing. As one of the contenders in the Western Conference, the Stars arguably needed a couple of small additions to put them ahead of teams like Colorado and Minnesota. Expect GM Jim Nill to be active.

Pierre LeBrun confirmed the Seguin news and added,”…also worth clarifying the Stars were already using $3.8M of his cap hit with other players injured.” He adds, “Also, hearing that Rantanen is likely out longer than 2 weeks. So some of cap relief will be to manage all their injuries but also some trade deadline flexibility as well.”

It’s not clear where the Stars will spend the money, but they’ve been linked to a few names and they’ve reportedly eyed landing another defenseman.
