Something Has to Give with Nick Robertson in Toronto

Time’s ticking on Nick Robertson in Toronto—either the Maple Leafs commit to him with a real role or let him find a fresh start elsewhere.

For those fans who follow the Toronto Maple Leafs, the clock is ticking on a decision about Nick Robertson. If the Maple Leafs don’t change coaches, for Robertson’s own sake, it’s probably time to let him move on to another team.

Robertson’s Time in Toronto Hasn’t Helped His Career

Robertson’s experience in Toronto has been chaotic. If the Maple Leafs aren’t going to actually change how they use him, they should let him go somewhere stable. He’s been scratched, bumped around every line, and never really stuck anywhere. That kind of flip-flopping destroys confidence, and he’s at the age where he needs some consistency.

He’s shown flashes and some improvement, and he’s one of the hardest workers on the team. So I get why the Maple Leafs keep hoping he’ll stick in the lineup. But from his perspective, it has to be soul-crushing. There are constant trade rumours and near-deals. He even reportedly asked for a move and got nowhere.

Robertson Needs Some Security and a Chance to Play

At this point, Robertson needs security. The team should either commit to him with a real role and a longer-term deal or let him go somewhere he can actually settle and grow.

Size is a fair critique. He hasn’t quite overcome it the way some other smaller players have. Still, he’s not the only player who’s struggled with that. The bigger problem here is usage. When a guy gets treated like a plug-in toy and never gets the chance to build rhythm, you shouldn’t be shocked he never fully breaks out.

Moving Robertson Isn’t Mean, It’s Probably to His Benefit

Be honest: Is the Maple Leafs’ coaching staff really doing him any favours? If the answer’s no, then moving him on this offseason isn’t being mean. It’s the right call for his career and for the team’s roster clarity.

So give Robertson a real shot with committed coaching and a settled role, or cut him loose. Sitting in limbo helps nobody. Certainly not Robertson, and not the team. If Toronto wants to be fair and smart, they either fix the environment now or let him to find a place that will.
