Simek Signs 4-Yr Extension With Sharks

Defenseman Radim Simek has avoided unrestricted free agency and signed a four-year contract with the San Jose Sharks.

Defenseman Radim Simek has avoided unrestricted free agency and signed a four-year contract with the San Jose Sharks. Financial terms were not released at first but Cap Friendly has the deal valued at $2.25 million per season.

The 27-year-old defenseman has nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 47 games this season, and 18 points (three goals, 15 assists) in 88 NHL games since signing with San Jose as a free agent on May 23, 2017. He’s part of the Sharks plans to retool after a disastrous season that will see them out of the playoffs in 2019-20.

The Sharks posted photos of Simek signing his deal Monday afternoon.

Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said of the extension, “Radim has been an integral piece of our team defense for the last two seasons,” He added, “His style of play blends a sound defensive game, coupled with a heavy physical ingredient and good puck-moving skills.”

Wilson then said he expects the blueliner will be part of our team’s core moving forward which is important for the Sharks as they try to rebound in one summer, becoming competitive again in short order. Wilson said this season was unfortunate but the team is not going through a rebuild. They will do what they can compete again immediately.
