Sens Make Two Trades: Acquire Foegele, Ship Out Perron

The Ottawa Senators made two deals at the trade deadline. The first trade brought in Warren Foegele and a conditional third-round pick in 2026 from the Los Angeles Kings, for a second-round pick in 2026 and a conditional third-round pick in 2026. The second trade was sending David Perron to his former team, the Detroit Red Wings, for a conditional fourth-round pick in 2026.

Foegele, 29, is known for his speed and penalty-killing ability. His current contract carries a $3.5 million cap hit and runs through 2027. However, he hasn’t lived up to expectations this season with the Los Angeles Kings, recording just nine points (seven goals, two assists) in 47 games. In the previous two seasons, Foegele was a reliable contributor at roughly a 20-goal pace. The Ottawa Senators will be hoping a change of scenery helps him rediscover that scoring touch.

Why Trade Out Perron?

Perron, 37, is in the final year of his contract and will be an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the season. Given that Perron is 37, there is potential that he could choose to retire at the end of the season. In addition, rookie Stephen Halliday has done a great job at filling his spot in the lineup while Perron was injured. Then, the trade for Foegele pushed the veteran even further down on the depth chart.

This will be Perron’s second stint with the Detroit Red Wings. He previously played for Detroit from 2022 to 2024 before his contract expired. Perron is believed to be close to returning from injury and is expected to join the Red Wings for the stretch run. So far this season, he has recorded 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists) in 49 games. His leadership will likely be missed by the Ottawa Senators but could prove valuable for Detroit as they push to reach the postseason for the first time since 2016.
