Elliotte Friedman noted on Sportsnet that Jean-Gabriel Pageau has been traded to the New York Islanders and that the panelists were just waiting on the return to come down.
Bruce Garrioch reports the Sens get a first in 2020, a second in 2020 and a third in 2022 in exchange for Pageau from the Isles. There are conditions on all picks. Huge haul for the Senators!
Pageau was one of the bigger names rumored to be moved at this year’s deadline and the Islanders, while not front-and-center in talks, were always rumored to be in the mix and lurking in the background.
The Price Paid for Pageau
We had asked earlier, was Pageau going to be worth the cost? He was having the best season of his career, but many insiders wondered if he was a shoe-in to be as productive as some were suggesting or has he had been in Ottawa this season. No doubt, Pageau is a strong player, but in the end, he could be a rental considering Pageau was unable to come to terms on an extension with the Senators. It was a big price to pay for someone who might not stick around.
The picks are conditional in that if the Islanders become a lottery team, the first-rounder becomes a 2021 pick. Ottawa now have 14 picks in this year’s draft.
Pageau is a good player but he could be the highest risk-reward player moved on today’s deadline. Brian Burke believes the Islanders must have gotten permission to speak with Pageau about a contract extension.
