Senators Trade Brady Tkachuk to Panthers in Franchise-Altering Move
The Ottawa Senators have officially made one of the biggest decisions in franchise history, trading captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers in exchange for the ninth-overall pick and 25th-overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, a 2029 first-round selection, and a 2030 second-round pick. The move reunites Brady with older brother Matthew Tkachuk in Florida and signals a dramatic shift in direction for the Senators.
For Ottawa, this wasn’t simply about collecting draft assets. It was about facing the reality of the situation.
Senators Act Before Losing Leverage
While Tkachuk remained the face of the franchise and one of the NHL’s premier power forwards, there had been growing belief around the league that his long-term future in Ottawa was uncertain. Reports and speculation throughout the offseason suggested that the captain’s commitment beyond his current contract wasn’t guaranteed, with Florida consistently viewed as a potential destination because of his family ties and the opportunity to compete for championships alongside Matthew.
Rather than risk seeing the situation drag out over the next two seasons, Senators management elected to move early and maximize their return. The decision mirrors the path Calgary was forced to take when Tkachuk made it clear he wasn’t prepared to commit long term before eventually being dealt to the Panthers in 2022.
Sources around the league had increasingly questioned whether Brady would ultimately remain in Ottawa beyond his current deal, and the Senators chose not to let history repeat itself.
Massive Draft Haul for Ottawa
Although replacing a player like Tkachuk is nearly impossible, Ottawa receives a significant package to continue building its core.

The ninth-overall selection gives the organization another premium prospect immediately, while the 25th pick adds additional flexibility. Future first- and second-round selections also provide valuable assets that could either be used at the draft or packaged in future trades.
For a team attempting to establish sustainable success, adding multiple high-end assets may ultimately prove more beneficial than risking the possibility of losing leverage later.
Panthers Go All-In Again
Florida, meanwhile, continues to show why they have become one of the NHL’s most aggressive contenders.
General manager Bill Zito has never been afraid to make bold moves, and adding Brady Tkachuk gives the Panthers another elite competitor to complement an already loaded roster.
The idea of the Tkachuk brothers playing together has long been discussed, and now it becomes reality.
Brady brings physicality, leadership, scoring ability, and the type of playoff mentality that perfectly fits Florida’s identity. The Panthers have built their recent success around hard-to-play-against forwards, and Tkachuk may be the ultimate example of that style.
For Ottawa, this marks the end of an era.
For Florida, it could be the beginning of another championship window—with the Tkachuk brothers finally wearing the same sweater.
